Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2: The curious TPS mode reveals its secrets! Our interview with Infinity Ward

game news Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2: The curious TPS mode reveals its secrets! Our interview with Infinity Ward

As you know, the beta version of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has been released recently and players from all over the world can try the new features of this opus. Among them, there is something quite unusual for an FPS, a third-person view mode. How did the teams at Activision come to create this mode? Well here is the answer, in an interview!

Yes, it’s not every day that a historically well-known first-person title changes perspective. in the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (expected on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series on October 28) it will be possible to play the third person in dedicated modes – as is already the case in the multiplayer beta currently running. If you want to try it out, early access will be extended to PC and Xbox gamers from September 22-23 who have pre-ordered the game, while all PlayStation fans will also be able to access it. Please note that from September 24 to 26, the beta will be available to everyone, regardless of your support, with no need to pre-order! So there is still time to try this mode in TPS, be it in Team Deathmatch, Domination (where you must capture three flags) and Hardpoint, which is based on controlling areas.

Third person view, more affordable Call of Duty

For our part, when we tried this originality, we were not disappointed. Third-person mode works well, as the camera switches back to first-person when pointed. The action remains fluid in all circumstances, only from a new point of view! To learn more about the subject, we were able to talk with geoff smithresponsible for co-directing the multiplayer design for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. This is his response:

“As a developer, we always want to try things… when you play a third-person game, the experience tends to be more accessible. You have better situational awareness, if you are in cover you can see above. We wanted to see if it could work with Modern Warfare even though we’re primarily an FPS game. In the beta version, therefore, we launch Hardpoint in third person view, we want to do the same with other modes, even Battle Royale! We’ve done a lot of work on this and it gives us an additional tool to shake up the post-launch experience and keep it fresh.” – Geoff Smith, Multiplayer Design Director (Infinity Ward)

Towards a mix between first and third person?

Yeah, we couldn’t resist asking Geoff Smith if there would be games in the future that could accommodate both TPS and FPS players at the same time. “For now, it’s not planned,” he replies. “But it’s something we tested during production, like a bonus that the player could equip or not, like aoptional option, we even tried fights with a first person team against a third person. So I’m not saying it will never happen, but we won’t force players to play with or against people in third person. It will continue to be a special mode.” Basically, time will tell.
