Specific: Oscar nominee and 2x Golden Globe winner James Franco Cuban leader to play Fidel Castro in Miguel Bardem’s film Alina from Cuba Set to play Natalia “Natti” Revuelta alongside Imagine Award winner Mia Maestro, the Cuban-born socialite with whom she has a passionate love affair.
They are joined by previously announced actress Ana Villafane who plays Alina Fernandez aka Castro’s daughter. Screenplay by Oscar-nominated writer Jose Rivera (motorcycle diary) and Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, the Cuban exile-turned-social advocate Fernandez, who was born as the result of a tussle between Revuelta and Castro. Revuelta sacrificed her personal belongings and finances and her physician husband’s to help start the communist revolution. Fernández learned that she was Fidel Castro’s daughter at the age of 10 when, after several years of secret visits at his home, her mother finally revealed that “El Comandante” was her biological father. Alina became one of Castro’s most vocal critics, having been arrested on more than one occasion for trying to leave, and was classified as a dissident forbidden to travel outside Cuba. Eventually, she moved to Spain in 1993, an event that garnered headlines from every major news network around the world before making Miami her permanent home.
Rounding out the supporting cast are Alana de la Rosa, Maria Cecilia Botero (Charm), Harding Jr., and Cuban-born actors Sian Chiong and Rafael Ernesto Hernandez.
The film is being shot entirely on location in and around Cartagena and Bogotá, with Colombian colonial Spanish architecture and design playing out to Castro-era Havana, Cuba. The cameras roll on August 15th.
John Martinez O’Phelan, the project’s lead creative producer for Austin-based Mankind Entertainment, says, “Since the film’s inception, our focus has been on creating an artistic piece of modern Hispanic history, with the vision for the project of America, Truly inclusive through uniting actors and creatives from both Latin America and the world with intergenerational and more recent Latin origins. That said, casting Ana and Mia was a no-brainer, apart from the trajectory of their previous work , one representing modern Cuban-America and the other Argentina. After watching Ana’s reel and auditioning her, it became clear that she was perfectly suited and had a good voice to carry the material, And Mia’s work in the past with Jose spoke for itself and sizzled at the writer/actress reunion.
O’Phelan says, “Finding and persuading James Franco to play Castro was a fun and challenging process, and it’s been a collaborative work of the universe, as our director’s original order was to find an actor who would play the role of Castro.” bears a close physical resemblance to the real. Castro to produce, as well as finding someone Alina Fernandez will strongly support. In order to arrive at such a difficult look to cast, we took the form of our focal compass. used Fidel Castro’s ancient Galician heraldry, and then sifted through the entire ranks of actors of Latin descent in Hollywood to find someone who has a similar facial structure. The Galicians have a view of the Spanish and Portuguese ancestry. In an in-depth search of our hopefuls, we found that James, by far, bore the closest resemblance to the faces of our industry’s leading actors, meaning that his focus would be on building his character accents and captivating the audience we had. and tell the story with true visual integrity. There will be a great on-screen match to kick off. Overall, working with such a supportive and exciting cast has been a true blessing for our team and project.”
As part of the film’s media package, O’Phelan also launched a fully funded companion documentary. daughter of revolutionwhat is being done filmed together on location Alina from Cuba With Emmy and Peabody Award winning director Thaddeus D.
