This pre-DC Universe DC film is a supernatural neo-noir, with ex-John Wick Keanu Reeves as a very dour John Constantine. Much made in the style of an old detective thriller (but with supernatural elements), Constantine Have an entertaining time with a great cast (Reeves is joined by Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, and Peter Stormare, among others) and more than a few silly visual gags. ,Pete People

Domhnall Gleeson stars in Alex Garland’s directorial debut East Machina As Caleb, a young programmer who wins the chance to spend a week with Nathan (Oscar Isaacs), an elusive tech CEO, on his luxurious and isolated campus. Upon arrival, Caleb agrees to be the lead partner of Nathan’s latest venture: a Turing test to measure the intelligence of Ava (Alicia Vikander), an advanced humanoid robot. A sleek, slow-burning sci-fi thriller that examines the intersection of consciousness, gender and power, East Machina is a remarkable film and easily ranks as one of the most notable sci-fi films of 2010. —Toussaint Igna

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy

Three of the best Marvel movies of all time made their way to Netflix and Hulu. Yes, I said three.

with Sam Raimi latest With Marvel movies out and new Spider-Man movies appearing left and right, we’ve talked a lot about our love of his original trilogy of Spider-Man movies. With excellent use of Raimi’s horror backgrounds, a great cast with terrifying villain performances, and a strong moral centerIt’s hard to beat.

I will gladly join in praising the first two films, which are both excellent, but I’d like to take a moment to praise the third entry. It’s messy, sure, but in a really charming way (if you can get past the third act or all the Topper Grace as poison stuff). In spider man 3However, the successes of the first two films go to Peter’s head, leaving him as an insufficient Spidey and, most importantly, a very shy boyfriend for Mary-Jane. Much of this film is about what it means to be a current partner, something in which Peter fails miserably. If you’re one of the many people who think this movie is simply a curse on the franchise, I encourage you to give it a try again. And hey, even if you still don’t like it, the other two movies are now on Netflix for you to boot in any time. —PV

With a beautiful synth score by Tangerine Dream, dazzling nighttime cinematography by Donald Thorin, and an iconic and emotionally subtle performance by Cannes, Thief A stone-cold stunner and a gem in the crown of one of the finest directors working today. The end of obscurity. -This
