“We were all transported”

After his single in the Laver Cup on Saturday, Novak Djokovic returned to the evening of Federer’s retirement and his return after several months without playing.

“How did you live this farewell party for Roger Federer ?
I think we can all agree that it was one of the most beautiful moments we could experience live or on television. We all knew that saying goodbye to Roger was going to be emotional, but I think we were all elated. It was a mix of emotions. The sadness, because one of the greatest athletes of all time is leaving the sport, but we also saw him happy with how everything turned out. He was very grateful indeed and privileged to be there to witness this. It was one of the best moments I’ve had in my life, without a doubt.

Did this game make you feel older?
I still don’t feel that old (the Serbian is 35 years old), to be honest, not old enough to finish my degree. I still feel that my body responds well to me, that it listens to me well. That’s the key, I think, when you’re over 35. I think you feel like things are different than they were at 25, that’s for sure. Your body reacts differently during certain competitions or when you play for several weeks in a row. I’m adjusting my schedule, I don’t play as much as I did a few years ago. I want to continue winning the most important tournaments. And I don’t have the end of my career as a horizon at the moment. I can’t give you a number of years.

You felt on the court that you had not played since July 10 and the Wimbledon final ?
Not really, because the performance was excellent, both in singles and doubles. I felt very good on the field. I haven’t done too many bad things, especially in singles. Everything I have tried has worked very well. After an absence of several months, we don’t really know how we will feel on the pitch. It is quite unpredictable. But the last three or four days of training here I hit the ball very well. At the start of the match, I felt like I needed to make my presence felt on the pitch. That’s what got me through this comfortable first set. (6-1, 6-3). It was a huge confidence boost for me. »
